Avadi is a city in the northwestern part of the Chennai metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu. The urban area sits on flat terrain and spreads out with residential and industrial districts that line up along several main roads and railway tracks.
The city gained public attention when the Indian National Congress held a major gathering here in the mid-nineteen fifties to discuss economic policy. Later on, factories for military vehicles and equipment developed in the area.
The population of 345,996 residents includes 84 percent Hindu, 11 percent Christian, and 5 percent Muslim communities, with a literacy rate of 82 percent.
The city sits on a railway line that brings commuters to Chennai each day and on several bus routes that connect different parts of the region. Visitors find markets, smaller shops, and eateries along the main streets, especially near the railway station.
Large sections of the surrounding area are taken up by defense industry installations, which give the cityscape an industrial character. Many residents work in these facilities or in related sectors that deal with production and logistics.
