Sholavaram Lake, lake in India
Sholavaram Lake is a large reservoir in Thiruvallur district, located about 24 kilometers north of Chennai. The water body stretches wide across open grounds, with a canal connecting it to Puzhal Lake to manage water flow between the two bodies.
The lake reservoir was built before 1877 during British rule and has long served as a water storage source for Chennai. A nearby airstrip used during World War II later became a racing track that hosted events from the 1960s through the 1980s.
The lake is called Sholavaram Aeri by locals and serves as a peaceful retreat from city life. Fishing and family picnics are common activities around the water, reflecting how the community values this open space for relaxation.
Visit in early morning or late evening to enjoy sunrise and sunset views over the water, especially on weekends when more people gather. The surrounding paths and canal roads are accessible for walking and exploring the area at your own pace.
The lake sits adjacent to a former airstrip with a T-shaped layout that served as a World War II military testing ground before becoming a racing track in later decades. Drivers still recall the thrill of events held here, adding an overlooked chapter of motorsport history to this quiet water body.
