Ettayapuram, town
Ettayapuram is a small town in Thoothukudi district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, with old buildings, simple streets, and a slow pace of daily life. The town sits in a farming region and is known for its connections to Tamil literature, with local temples and memorials spread across its center.
The town was known as Ilasanadu under Pandya rule before taking its current name in 1565 from a ruling family. In 1945, a memorial dedicated to Mahakavi Bharathiar, a poet who also championed Indian independence, was inaugurated here with Gandhi's blessing.
The town is closely tied to Mahakavi Bharathiar, a celebrated Tamil poet whose former home can be visited as a memorial today. Along the streets, traditional handloom weavers still work, and their cloth is sold at the local markets alongside everyday produce.
The town center is easy to walk through, and half a day is generally enough to visit the main sites. The cooler months between November and February are the most comfortable for a visit, as heat can be intense during the rest of the year.
Umaru Pulavar, a celebrated Islamic poet who wrote in Tamil, was also born in this town, making it a rare place where two very different literary traditions have their roots. His best-known work is a Tamil epic about the life of the Prophet Mohammed.
