Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, International airport in Guwahati, India
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is an international commercial airport with a military base located in Guwahati, northeastern India. The asphalt runway extends for about 3100 meters, and the terminal building handles several hundred passengers at any given time.
The facility opened in 1958 for both civilian and military use and was named after Gopinath Bordoloi, who served as the first Chief Minister of Assam after independence. Over the decades the terminal expanded to handle growing traffic from across the region.
Throughout the terminal you can see displays of regional handicrafts and decorative works that give arriving visitors their first impression of the local traditions. Some travelers spend their layover time looking at these pieces and getting a sense of what makes the area distinct.
The airport sits about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the center of Guwahati and connects India's northeast with major cities across the country and a few destinations in Asia. Getting there is easiest by taxi or ride service because public connections run less frequently.
In addition to civilian passenger operations the Indian Air Force uses the runway for its own flights, so military aircraft sometimes appear on the tarmac. This dual role shapes daily life at the site where both holiday travelers and armed forces personnel move through the same spaces.
