Bhowanipore, Historical neighborhood in South Kolkata, India

Bhowanipore stretches from Lower Circular Road to Hazra Road, mixing residential buildings, shops, and schools across four municipal wards. The neighborhood blends older structures with modern stores, showing how a Kolkata suburb developed over time.

The area was originally one of 38 villages surrounding the British settlement, coming under British control between 1717 and 1758. This early period shaped it as an outer district of the expanding city.

Multiple communities including Bengali, Marwari, Punjabi, and Gujarati families live here, each bringing their own traditions and celebrations that shape daily life. This diversity shows in the shops, temples, and street scenes where different customs exist side by side.

Multiple bus routes and local trains connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city, with Jadu Babu's Bazaar on Asutosh Mukherjee Road serving as a shopping hub. Walking the main streets gives you the best sense of the area, as everything spreads out naturally from these routes.

The area earned the nickname Cinema Para in the 20th century because of several old movie theaters such as Purna, Indira, and Bijoli that stood here. These cinemas show the role that films and entertainment once held in this Kolkata neighborhood.
