Fergusson College, Historical college in Shivajinagar, India.
Fergusson College is a higher education institution in Shivajinagar, Pune, set on a 65-acre campus where Victorian buildings stand alongside traditional Indian architectural styles. The grounds are divided into separate sections for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with arts and science programs distributed across dedicated wings.
The institution was founded in 1884 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, and other leaders of the Indian reform movement to expand access to education. It later received recognition from the central ministry in Delhi in 2015 as one of the country's few educational heritage sites.
The name honors James Fergusson, a Scottish graduate from the University of Edinburgh whose family supported the foundation financially. Students today use the amphitheater for performances and the botanical gardens for hands-on practice in botany and biology.
The campus sits centrally in the Shivajinagar neighborhood and is generally open to visitors during daytime hours, except during exam periods or holidays. Walking through the main gates from surrounding streets provides the easiest access to the grounds.
The NM Wadia Amphitheatre on the grounds is named after a prominent Parsi industrialist whose family contributed to the institution's development. The PMC Heritage Grade I status protects the original facades from structural alterations, preserving the 19th-century appearance.
