Kalayat Ancient Bricks Temple Complex, Hindu temple complex in Kaithal district, India
Kalayat Ancient Bricks Temple Complex comprises two surviving structures built from bricks displaying elaborate floral designs and traditional North Indian architecture without mortar. The buildings showcase skilled brick-laying techniques characteristic of their construction period.
The complex was built in the 8th century and originally held five temples positioned along a sacred tank. Construction followed the Gurjara-Pratihara architectural style prevalent during that era.
The name Kalayat comes from Kapilayatana, referencing sage Kapila who taught Sankhya-Darshan philosophy at this location. Visitors can see how the complex layout reflects this spiritual heritage through its spatial arrangement and design.
The site is accessible year-round and easily reached by road since it sits near major routes from surrounding cities. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven in places.
The temples display a rare beehive brick pattern similar to designs seen in ancient cave temples at Ajanta and Ellora. This distinctive construction method is rarely found in other structures from the same period in the region.
