Shahid Abbaspour Dam, Arch dam in Abezhdan District, Iran
Shahid Abbaspour Dam is an arch dam with double-curvature concrete design that crosses the Karun River. Two power stations integrated into the structure contain eight water turbines that produce electricity for the national grid.
Construction was completed in 1976 as the first major hydroelectric project on the Karun River, originally bearing a different name. The facility was later renamed Shahid Abbaspour.
The dam represents a milestone in Iranian engineering, demonstrating the nation's capability to construct large-scale water management infrastructure.
The site offers viewpoints and access points where visitors can observe the dam structure and the reservoir behind it. The best time to visit is when the facility is actively operating and the water level is visible.
The reservoir created by the dam is one of Iran's largest water management features formed by damming the Karun. This engineering work remains significant to the country's hydroelectric capacity and serves as evidence of technical capabilities developed locally.
