Salasel Castle

Salasel Castle is a stone fortress with multiple levels, defensive towers, and underground chambers positioned above the Shatit River and Dariun Canal. The structure integrates walls with an intricate water system that drew directly from the surrounding waterways.

The fortress originated in ancient times and was later rebuilt by the Sasanians, Safavids, and Qajars. Significant renovations occurred in the early modern period and during the 1800s, with each era adding its own building techniques.

The castle reflects how water shaped Persian society, with walls and channels working together to harness river power for both defense and daily needs. The design shows how communities adapted to their surroundings over many centuries.

The site is open to visitors on most days, with morning or late afternoon offering the best lighting to see the stonework clearly. Sturdy footwear is essential since the ground is uneven and underground passages can be cramped.

The structure forms part of a UNESCO-recognized system of ancient Persian canals and dams that demonstrates technical knowledge of water control on a remarkable scale. This engineering achievement supplied whole regions with irrigation and power from an era when such works were extraordinarily rare.
