Do-Ashkaft Cave

The limestone cave extends 23 meters deep and 15 meters wide, featuring a south-facing entrance that overlooks Kuhestan National Park at 1,600 meters elevation.

Iranian researchers F. Biglari and S. Heydari-Guran discovered this Middle Paleolithic site in 1996, conducting extensive surveys over four years to uncover Mousterian artifacts.

The excavations revealed numerous flint tools, animal bones, and charcoal that demonstrate the advanced tool-making capabilities of Neanderthal inhabitants in this region.

The cave location requires navigation through mountainous terrain, and visitors need proper equipment to access the archaeological site in Kermanshah Province.

Researchers found specific bone fragments from wild Caprinae with markings that indicate human processing during the Mousterian period, providing evidence of early hunting practices.
