Bolognano sits on a hill at 276 meters above sea level in the Orta Valley, covering 16.96 square kilometers of Abruzzo territory.

During medieval times, the settlement belonged to the abbey of San Clemente a Casauria and passed through several noble families including Caracciolo and Durini.

The church of Maria Entroterra contains a Madonna and Child statue along with a sixteenth-century fresco created by artist Paolo Cardone.
