Spilamberto, Italian comune

Spilamberto is a small town in the Province of Modena with narrow streets, old brick and stone houses, and several churches that have served the community for centuries. The main structures include a palace and fortress built by local noble families.

Spilamberto originates from 1210 when the city of Modena built a fortress to protect its borders. During the Middle Ages, the Rangoni family controlled the region, and their influence remains visible in the buildings and stories of the area.

The name comes from old Latin origins hinting at the town's ancient past as a trading hub. Today, community life centers around the main square where residents gather for markets and festivals that keep local traditions alive.

This town is best explored on foot through its narrow streets, and the local markets and festivals on the central square offer the best insight into daily life. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit when weather is pleasant and most local events take place.

The site served as a trading post on the Via Romea, an important route for pilgrims traveling to Rome, and was founded in 1210 by Modena as a strategic border post. Notably, Protestant reformer Martin Luther held a mass at an Augustinian monastery here in 1510 while traveling toward Rome.
