Piave, Major river in Veneto Region, Italy
The Piave is a waterway in Veneto Region that runs from the Dolomites to the Adriatic and passes through San Donà. Its bed is wide and shallow, with gravel beaches in some sections and green banks lined with poplars and willows.
The watercourse shifted its path in 1250 after a major flood that separated San Donà from Musile. During the First World War it served as a defense line for Italian forces against Austro-Hungarian troops.
Locals use the riverbanks for walks and small parks where residents meet or jog in the morning. On summer weekends you often see families picnicking under the trees lining the embankment.
Several bridges connect the shores and allow access to both parts of San Donà on either side. The riverside paths are suitable for cycling or quiet walks along the water on most days of the year.
After the 1250 flood the new watercourse created what is now the border between two municipalities. Local commemoration events recall the war events of 1918 along these waters every June.
