Sibillini Mountains, Mountain range in Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy.
The Sibillini Mountains are a limestone mountain range in the Province of Ascoli Piceno in central Italy, rising to 2476 meters (8123 feet) at Monte Vettore. Their slopes are often covered with low grass and scattered forests, with valleys and plateaus in between.
Caves in these mountains served as shelters for prehistoric people, with archaeological finds documenting their presence over many millennia. Shepherds and farmers later settled in the valleys and worked the land into modern times.
Residents celebrate festivals throughout the year for lentils and truffles from the mountains, with food always at the center of the gatherings. Mountain farms sell their products directly at small markets in the surrounding villages.
The national park has several access points near small towns, and hiking trails are marked with signs. Many routes are better accessible in summer, while higher elevations often have snow in winter.
In a high valley lives a small crustacean found only here and in no other body of water in the world. Lago di Pilato is its only habitat on the planet.
