Breuil-Cervinia, Alpine hamlet in Valtournenche, Italy
Breuil-Cervinia is a mountain hamlet in Valtournenche, Aosta Valley, sitting in a wide high valley beneath the north face of the Matterhorn at 2012 meters (6600 feet) elevation. The settlement consists of scattered clusters of houses, hotels, and chalets spread along the main road, surrounded by steep mountain slopes.
The settlement grew from a simple summer pasture with shepherds' huts in the 1850s, when climbers began exploring the Matterhorn. The transformation into a winter sports destination followed in the 20th century with the construction of the first lift systems.
The name joins the local French term Breuil with Cervino, the Italian word for the Matterhorn summit. Visitors today encounter a community where French and Italian are spoken side by side, and signs often carry both languages.
Travelers reach the hamlet via regular bus connections from Chatillon Saint Vincent train station in the valley, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) away. The road climbs steeply through several small villages, offering wide views over the valley along the way.
The ski area remains open eleven months a year, as the Plateau Rosa glacier stays skiable well into summer months. The slopes on the Italian side connect directly with the Swiss runs from Zermatt along the ridge.
