Loggia del Mercato Nuovo
Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, Renaissance market loggia near Ponte Vecchio, Florence, Italy.
The Loggia del Mercato Nuovo is a covered marketplace with stone arcades and open corridors built in 16th-century Florence. The structure features multiple bays beneath its vaulted ceiling and houses market stalls selling leather goods, local crafts, and traditional Florentine products today.
Giovanni Battista del Tasso designed this marketplace in the 16th century to support Florence's expanding silk and luxury fabric trade. The building was constructed during the height of the Renaissance and served as a major commercial hub for the city.
The name Loggia del Mercato Nuovo refers to its role as a hub for trading and commerce during the Renaissance period. Visitors can still observe today how the arcaded space beneath the stone vaults remains a working marketplace where vendors display goods and interact with shoppers.
The open-air arcade is accessible year-round, though summer months attract larger crowds and early mornings or late afternoons offer more space to browse. The stalls are arranged on flat ground and easy to navigate, though midday congestion can make movement difficult.
Beneath the arcade stands the Porcellino, a bronze boar statue with a peculiar coin-tossing tradition tied to it. An old Florentine saying holds that only coins falling through the grate beneath the animal's snout will grant a wish to the person who tossed them.
