Santa Brigida, Naples, Baroque church in central Naples, Italy
Santa Brigida is a Baroque church in central Naples with a Latin cross layout and several side chapels lining its interior. It stands beside the entrance to Galleria Umberto I., a prominent location in the heart of the city.
Construction began in 1609 when merchant Giovanni Antonio Bianco dedicated a chapel to Saint Brigida and established a conservatory for widows. This dual purpose shaped the building's original mission in the city.
The interior contains large Baroque frescoes painted by Luca Giordano that depict scenes from Saint Brigida's life. These paintings shape the visual experience inside and show how much care was taken with the decoration.
The church sits at Via Santa Brigida 68 in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from nearby attractions. Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the interior, and plan your visit during regular opening hours.
The church has a distinctly low dome at about 9 meters in height, an unusual design choice with an interesting backstory. Spanish authorities demanded this low profile to prevent the structure from blocking the gun emplacements at nearby Castel Nuovo.
