Sepolcro di Don Pedro de Toledo, Renaissance tomb in San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, Naples, Italy.
The Sepolcro di Don Pedro de Toledo is a marble tomb in San Giacomo degli Spagnoli church in Naples, decorated with four Cardinal Virtues statues at its corners. The sarcophagus displays kneeling figures of Don Pedro and his wife Maria, framed by ornate Corinthian capitals.
Giovanni da Nola created this monument between 1550 and 1570 for Spanish Viceroy Pedro Álvarez de Toledo. The sculptural work spanned two decades during the Viceroy's rule in Naples.
The four carved reliefs on the tomb show battles and victories that were central to Don Pedro's role as Viceroy. These scenes reflect how his military achievements shaped his identity and how people remembered him.
The tomb sits behind the main altar of the church and is visible from throughout the space. When visiting, take time to view the statue details and carved scenes from different angles.
Although built as the Viceroy's final resting place, his remains were actually buried in Florence. The monument remained incomplete because he died before it could be finished.
