Church of Pietà dei Turchini, Baroque church in Naples, Italy
The Church of Pietà dei Turchini features a facade completed in 1770 by Bartolomeo Vecchione and contains numerous paintings by renowned artists from the 17th century.
The church, established in 1592 by the Confraternity of the Incoronatella, underwent reconstruction after an explosion at Castel Nuovo damaged the structure in 1638.
The church maintained a conservatory that educated orphans in music, producing notable composers including Scarlatti, Giovanni Paisiello, and Giovan Battista Pergolesi.
The Centro di Musica Antica currently organizes concerts, masterclasses, and workshops focusing on Neapolitan musical compositions from the 16th to 18th centuries.
The name Turchini originates from the turquoise tunics worn by orphans who received care and education at the institution.
