Santa Barbara dei Cannonieri, Renaissance church in Rua Catalana, Naples, Italy
Santa Barbara dei Cannonieri is a secularized church located on Rua Catalana in central Naples with a Renaissance facade. The interior features a single nave decorated in the neoclassical style, supported by composite pilasters that frame a triangular pediment above the entrance.
The structure was built in the 16th century by the Serguidone family on foundations dating from the 14th century. It was originally called Santa Maria dell'Incoronatella to distinguish it from another church with a similar name elsewhere in the city.
The building served as a meeting place for different religious brotherhoods who gathered here to practice their devotions over many centuries. The interior still bears traces of these communities that shaped the life of the place over time.
The location sits near San Giacomo degli Italiani church in the historic center of Naples and is easily accessible on foot from the main thoroughfares. The interior layout is compact and straightforward, allowing for a quick visit if you are passing through the area.
Until 1960, the site hosted annual celebrations honoring Saint Barbara where members of the Marine Corps and Artillery units gathered for processions and fireworks displays. This tradition connected the place closely to Naples' military past.
