Santa Maria della Fede

Santa Maria della Fede is a baroque church in Naples with a travertine facade designed by Giovan Battista Soria and built in the shape of a Latin cross. The interior space features elaborate stucco decorations that embellish the single nave throughout.

The church received its name following the Catholic victory at the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620, where an image of Mary reportedly influenced the outcome. This naming connected the building permanently to this moment of religious and military importance.

The interior contains multiple chapels commissioned by noble families, displaying works by prominent artists such as Guercino, Nicolas Lorrain, and Domenichino. These spaces reflect the close relationship between religious devotion and aristocratic patronage in the city.

The building contains a sculptural masterwork by Gian Lorenzo Bernini depicting The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa of Avila, carved in white marble between 1647 and 1652. This creation represents one of the most celebrated examples of baroque religious sculpture in the region.
