Santa Sofia, Naples

Santa Sofia is a church building located on via Santa Sofia in Naples with two entrance doors marking its facade. The interior features a floor paved with decorative tiles from 1754, displaying intricate geometric and ornamental patterns throughout.

The current building was constructed in 1487 to serve a congregation dedicated to providing burial services for the poor. The 1980 earthquake caused significant damage, leading to its closure and the removal of its valuable artworks.

The church once housed important paintings by local artists that reflected the religious identity of Naples. Today visitors can see the architectural space that was central to the spiritual life of its neighborhood.

The building has been deconsecrated since the 1980 earthquake and is not open to visitors for interior access. You can still observe its architectural features from outside and appreciate the tiled work visible through the windows.

The church was built specifically as the headquarters of a charitable brotherhood focused on burying the destitute. This combination of religious space and social welfare work gives the building a distinctive purpose beyond typical parish functions.
