Santa Maria della Sapienza, Naples, Former church and Italian national heritage in central Naples, Italy

Built in 1625, Santa Maria della Sapienza exhibits intricate polychrome marble decorations, a Greek-cross plan, and spiral staircases leading to the main altar.

Cardinal Oliviero Carafa initiated construction in 1507 at the University della Sapienza site, which later transformed from a Clarissan to a Dominican monastery.

The church houses religious relics of Saints Evaristo and Prisciano, along with those of Maria Carafa, sister of Cardinal Giampietro Carafa who became Pope Paul IV.

Located on Via Costantinopoli 36-47, the structure has remained closed for decades and underwent restoration work in 2011 to preserve its architectural elements.

The interior features black and white pavement patterns that mirror those found in the church of San Gregorio Armeno, created by architect Dionisio Lazzari.
