Palazzo Orsini, Renaissance palace in San Giuseppe-Carità district, Naples, Italy
Palazzo Orsini is a Renaissance palace located in the San Giuseppe-Carità district of Naples. The structure features a rusticated stone base on the lower level, while the upper floors display marble-framed windows decorated with circular niches that hold ornamental busts.
Construction of the palace took place between 1513 and 1549 after nobleman Ferdinando Orsini purchased land from the nearby Santa Chiara monastery. This timeframe coincided with when Renaissance ideals were reshaping the architectural identity of Naples through the ambitious building projects of the city's elite families.
The palace represents the architectural preferences of Naples' nobility, featuring a mix of Gothic and Renaissance elements that characterize the period's building style.
The building has housed the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Naples since 1940, so it functions as an active educational institution. Access for visitors may be limited since classes and university activities take place inside, so checking in advance is recommended.
The entrance portal was added in 1766 by Mario Gioffredo and blends architectural elements in a way that sets it apart from other Neapolitan palaces. This later addition demonstrates how the building continued to evolve over time to reflect contemporary tastes and styles.
