Palazzo Spinelli di Fuscaldo, Palace in Naples, Italy
Palazzo Spinelli di Fuscaldo sits on Via dei Tribunali in Naples' historic center, following the path of the ancient Roman decumanus maximus. Today the building is divided into private apartments, with some sections showing wear, especially in the stucco areas where bare tufa stone shows through.
The building was first constructed in the 15th century and underwent a major renovation in the mid-18th century under Troiano Spinelli's direction. This transformation gave it the appearance and layout it has today, making it a key example of architecture from that period.
Inside, you can see frescoes painted by Pietro Bardellino and Giuseppe Cammarano that represent the artistic traditions of Naples. These wall paintings show the skill and creative vision that local painters brought to private homes.
The courtyard has an elliptical shape and features a grand staircase with dual ramps that is striking to see. The steep hillside location and narrow surrounding streets mean you should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the neighborhood properly.
The staircase was designed by Ferdinando Sanfelice and combines two ramps with niches where Roman cippes are placed. This unusual arrangement of the stairs is a rare architectural solution from the time when the palace was redesigned.
