Teatro Bellini, Opera house in central Naples, Italy
Teatro Bellini is an opera house in central Naples, built around an oval auditorium encircled by six tiers of box seats. The interior decoration was designed by Giovanni Ponticelli, Pasquale Di Criscito, and Vincenzo Paliotti, giving the hall a layered and ornate appearance.
The theater was built in 1864 by architect Carlo Sorgente for Baron Nicola Lacapra Sabelli, and a fire destroyed it just five years later. It was then rebuilt on the same site, reopening as the city continued to grow around it.
The theater takes its name from Vincenzo Bellini, a composer who studied in Naples and went on to write some of the most celebrated works in the Italian opera repertoire. His connection to the city gives the venue a meaning that goes beyond its walls.
The theater sits on Via Conte di Ruvo, directly across from the Academy of Fine Arts, making it easy to reach on foot from the historic center. Booking in advance is a good idea, as the hall holds a limited number of seats.
For several decades the building operated as a cinema and came close to being torn down in the 1960s. It was artist Tato Russo who led a restoration in 1986 that returned it to its original purpose as a live performance venue.
