Teatro Bellini, Opera house in central Naples, Italy
Teatro Bellini is an opera house in central Naples featuring six tiers of box seats encircling an oval-shaped performance area. The interior decorations were designed by Giovanni Ponticelli, Pasquale Di Criscito, and Vincenzo Paliotti.
Architect Carlo Sorgente built the theater in 1864 for Baron Nicola Lacapra Sabelli. After a fire in 1869, a new structure was reconstructed on the same site.
The theater bears the name of composer Vincenzo Bellini, who trained in music in Naples during the 1800s. This naming connects the venue to one of opera's greatest creators.
The theater is located across from the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples on Via Conte di Ruvo. With a seating capacity of 940, it sits in an accessible central location.
The venue served as a cinema for decades and nearly faced demolition in the 1960s. Artist Tato Russo led a restoration effort in 1986 that brought it back to its original opera house function.
