Forte Campomolon

Forte Campomolon is a military fortress built on a mountain ridge between two upland plateaus in the foothills of the Alps. The structure features stone walls and circular tunnel galleries that extend through the mountainside.

Construction started in 1912 but was never completed when World War I erupted. The unfinished structure was destroyed by Italian forces in 1916 to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

The fort is now part of an ecomuseum that preserves memories of battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces in this region. Visitors can see traces of this shared history reflected in the site's physical structures.

You can reach the fort on foot from Tonezza del Cimone by following marked trails through tunnels and mountain paths. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight, as some sections are dark and uneven.

Inside the fort lies a mysterious tubular gallery whose original purpose remains unclear. Experts suspect it was designed to hide or protect mounted howitzers during combat operations.
