Monte Toraro

Monte Toraro is a mountain in the Prealpi Venete range reaching about 1900 meters and forms a distinctive landmark in the Veneto region. Its steep slopes and varied terrain are crisscrossed by numerous trails of different difficulty levels.

Austrian forces occupied the mountain in 1916 during World War I and built fortifications along with an extensive system of tunnels. This military infrastructure left a lasting mark on the mountain's history.

The mountain connects multiple communities in the Veneto region, where local farmers maintain traditional agricultural methods in the surrounding valleys.

The mountain can be reached from various starting points, with Valico di Valbona serving as a common trailhead connected by marked paths. Routes vary in difficulty and allow hikers to choose based on their fitness level and available time.

The mountain served as a Cold War anti-aircraft missile defense position, with nearby Base Tuono standing as evidence of its strategic military role. Few visitors realize this more recent chapter of its past.
