Monte Toraro, Mountain summit in Arsiero, Italy

Monte Toraro is a 1,897-metre mountain of the Altopiano di Folgaria in the Prealpi Venete, in the province of Vicenza. Its summit, about 550 metres above the surrounding terrain, held the radar and command vehicles of Base Tuono, while the missile launch area lay at Malga Zonta near Passo Coe, roughly 4 km away.

Monte Toraro was fortified and became a theatre of war during World War I. Between 1966 and 1977 the nearby Passo Coe hosted Base Tuono, part of NATO's command-and-control system with twelve other bases in north-east Italy and operational area of the 66th Guided Missile Interceptor Group. Its control area, with radar and command vehicles, sat on the summit of Monte Toraro, about 4 km from the launch area at Malga Zonta.
