Arian Baptistry, Religious baptistery in Ravenna, Italy

The Arian Baptistry is an octagonal brick building topped with a decorated dome. Inside, mosaics cover the walls and ceiling with religious scenes and symbolic imagery.

King Theodoric built this structure in the late 5th century as part of his religious complex. It represents a period when different branches of Christianity coexisted in the region.

The building came from a time when two Christian communities worshipped in separate places throughout the city. You can sense how different beliefs existed side by side in this space.

Plan to spend enough time inside to look at the details carefully without feeling rushed. The interior is compact, so you can see everything from different angles without much walking.

The dome mosaic shows Jesus as a young man without a beard, which was unusual in early Christian art. This representation set it apart from later depictions found in Western churches.
