Spirito Santo, Early Christian church in central Ravenna, Italy
Spirito Santo is an early Christian church in central Ravenna with a long rectangular layout and a Renaissance portico at its entrance. Inside, rows of columns divide the space into a central nave with two side aisles.
The church began as an Arian cathedral in the 6th century. Later in the 16th century it underwent major renovations that changed its architectural character and purpose.
The basilica contains thirteen original columns from its initial construction period, with one additional column crafted from Cipollino marble displaying distinct architectural techniques.
The floor sits lower than the original church level due to settling over centuries. The interior layout with its columns and side aisles creates a compact feeling despite its length.
A 6th-century ambon inside features an unusual design with crosses set on spheres and small fluted columns. These elements form three small shrines decorated with shell and pediment motifs.
