Temple of Venus Erycina, Roman temple on Capitoline Hill, Rome, Italy
The Temple of Venus Erycina stood near the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, featuring columns and architectural elements common to Roman religious structures.
Dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus ordered the construction of this temple in 217 BC after consulting the Sibylline Books following the Battle of Trasimeno.
The temple served as a central location for Romans to honor Venus Erycina through ceremonies and offerings, reflecting the connection between religion and politics.
The temple remains are currently inaccessible as they lie beneath modern structures, though coins from 57 BC show its original appearance.
Two temples dedicated to Venus Erycina existed in Rome, with this one on the Capitoline Hill predating its sister temple on the Quirinal by thirty-three years.
