Schutzhaus Latzfonser Kreuz, Mountain hut and restaurant in Klausen - Chiusa, Italy
Schutzhaus Latzfonser Kreuz is a mountain hut with a restaurant on the rocky ridge of the Ritzlar range in South Tyrol, at around 2305 meters above sea level (about 7560 feet). A small church stands right next to the hut, making this a combined stopping point for hikers and pilgrims alike.
The site was recognized as a pilgrimage destination in 1743, and a small church was built there in 1868 on the remains of an earlier chapel. This suggests the place had already been used for devotion well before it received any formal recognition.
A small church next to the hut holds a statue of the Black Christ, which local communities carry between the summit and the valley depending on the season. This seasonal movement is a living tradition that connects the surrounding villages to the mountain.
The hut is open from May through October and is reached by a hiking trail starting from the parking area above the village of Lazfons. Because of the high elevation, weather can turn quickly, so bringing warm and waterproof layers is a good idea.
On a clear day, the ridge offers a view that takes in several Alpine summits at once, including Langkofel, Grohmann Peak, Kesselkogel, and the Rosengarten range. What makes this unusual is that these peaks belong to different mountain groups, yet all come into sight from a single spot.
