Torre delle Milizie

Torre delle Milizie, Medieval inclined tower in central Rome, Italy

Torre delle Milizie is a medieval defensive tower near Trajan's Market that rises roughly 50 meters above the surrounding area. It has a square base measuring around 10 by 9.5 meters and forms part of the archaeological complex that visitors can explore.

The tower was built in the early 13th century during the time of Pope Innocent III. It later came under the control of various noble families, including the Annibaldi and Caetani, who used it as a residence and fortification.

The tower displays medieval building methods that are seldom seen in Rome today, featuring thick walls and solid construction designed for defense. Visitors can sense the raw strength of this old architecture and understand how the city protected itself in those times.

The tower can be viewed from outside near Trajan's Market, where other archaeological remains are located. It is worth allowing time to explore the full complex, as there is considerable ground to cover and some areas are exposed to the elements.

A major earthquake in the 14th century damaged the structure severely and caused the tilt visible today. This lean makes it an interesting example of how natural disasters shaped Rome's buildings.
