Castello Baradello, Medieval castle on Baradello Hill in Camerlata, Italy

Castello Baradello is a stone fortress on a hilltop in Como featuring a central square tower standing 28 meters tall. The walls show construction from different periods, revealing how the site was built and rebuilt over the centuries.

A Roman emperor had the fortress rebuilt in the late 12th century upon foundations from late antiquity, then gifted it to the citizens of Como. This rebuilding transformed the structure into an important possession for the local population.

The chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas sits within the fortress and houses the remains of a notable 13th-century leader whose story is tied to the place. Visitors today can sense the connection between this religious space and the local history it holds.

The tower sits on a hilltop reached by steep pathways and is best visited during warmer months when regular access is available. Sturdy footwear and time for the climb should be part of your visit plan.

The hilltop was once home to an Iron Age Celtic settlement long before the modern city of Como developed. This ancient layer beneath the fortress makes the spot a crossroads between antiquity and medieval times.
