Saint-Pierre Castle, Medieval castle and natural science museum in Saint-Pierre, Italy
Saint-Pierre Castle rises on a rocky hill in the Aosta Valley and is structured with four round towers and architectural elements from different building periods. Nine rooms inside now house exhibitions of the regional museum.
The fortress was founded in 1191 by the de Castro Sancti Petri brothers as a fortified house with a tower on this strategic hilltop location. Over the centuries it underwent multiple rebuildings and modifications.
The natural science museum inside displays specimens of local animals, rocks, and information about the Aosta Valley environment. Visitors can see how the collection reflects the wildlife and natural features of this mountain region.
Access is seasonal so checking opening times beforehand is important before planning a visit. Expect stairs and sloped pathways when exploring the fortification.
A major renovation in 1873 by architect Camillo Boggio added Bavarian architectural elements and dramatically altered its appearance. This blend of medieval and alpine architecture makes the structure visually distinctive.
