Sarre Royal Castle, Royal castle in Sarre, Aosta Valley, Italy.
The castle sits on a hilltop with a square central tower and a long building shape overlooking the Aosta Valley and the Mont Blanc road below. Inside, three floors contain collections of furnishings, hunting equipment, and historical objects from the 1800s and early 1900s.
A fortress originally stood here starting in 1242, but the current building was built in 1708. King Victor Emanuel II later made it into a hunting lodge and shaped the spaces with his interests.
The rooms reflect how the Savoy family lived and spent time here, with furnishings and objects from different periods displayed throughout. Hunting equipment and decor everywhere show how important this sport was to those who stayed.
A sunny day makes for the best visit when the terrace and exterior shine. Wear sturdy shoes since the hill is steep and the interior stairs have many steps.
The walls are decorated with hunting trophies of ibex and chamois that King Umberto I shot in the surrounding Alps. This collection shows the hunting adventures from more than 100 years ago in these mountains.
