Saint-Martin-de-Corléans Megalithic Area

Saint-Martin-de-Corléans Megalithic Area, Archaeological site and museum in Aosta, Italy.

Description

Saint-Martin-de-Corléans Megalithic Area is an archaeological site featuring stone burial chambers, burial cists, and carved standing stones spread across about one hectare. The excavated ground reveals multiple construction phases with post holes that once held wooden structures marking ritual lines or arrangements.

History

The site was discovered by chance in 1969 during residential construction and shows five distinct phases of use spanning from the Recent Neolithic period through the Bronze Age. This long occupation demonstrates that the location held meaning for people over many centuries.

Culture

The site reveals how ancient people honored their dead and held rituals through monumental tombs and standing stones that once marked sacred spaces. These remains show us what mattered most to them and how they expressed their beliefs through their landscape.

Practical

The location is in the city center of Aosta and is easily reached on foot or by local buses that stop near the old town. Wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea since you will walk around the excavated ground and uneven terrain.

A triangular stone structure called Tomb 2 contained the remains of 39 individuals and remained in use for nearly one thousand years. This makes it one of the longest-used burial sites archaeologists have found in this region.
