Torre del lebbroso

The Torre del Lebbroso is a medieval tower standing on the western side of Aosta's ancient Roman walls, featuring a square structure with external stairs climbing its outer face. Today the building functions as an exhibition space for visitors to explore.

The tower was built in the 11th century and originally belonged to a noble family before being sold in 1773 to a religious order. Following this sale, its purpose and use changed significantly.

The tower gained literary fame through a 19th century novel that told the story of someone living within its walls. This connection to literature has drawn visitors interested in the cultural heritage of the region.

The tower is located in a central part of the city and is easy to reach on foot. Wear comfortable shoes when visiting, as the internal staircase is quite steep.

The tower incorporates sections of an earlier Roman fortification, with original Roman windows still bringing natural light to its interior levels. These architectural layers reveal how the city was repeatedly rebuilt over many centuries.
