San Michele Arcangelo abbey

The San Michele Arcangelo abbey is a Romanesque monastery in Montescaglioso featuring two spacious cloisters, a bell tower, and extensive stone arches. The structure shows typical medieval characteristics with vaulted passages designed to encourage prayer and reflection.

The monastery was founded in 893 and gained prominence under Norman rule between the 11th and 13th centuries. The Macabeo family's donations significantly supported its growth and prosperity during this period.

The refectory upstairs displays frescoes from the 16th century showing religious saints alongside classical figures like Pythagoras. This blend reflects how the monks valued both spiritual and ancient knowledge in their community life.

The grounds are easy to explore on foot with multiple entrances to different areas. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since you will walk over stone surfaces and stairs.

Archaeological excavations beneath the eastern cloister uncovered remains of Greek necropolises and urban structures from the 7th century BCE. These finds reveal that a settlement existed at this location long before the monastery was built.
