Founded in 1034 by Adelmo di Subbio, the abbey received substantial property donations and transitioned from Benedictine to Camaldolese order in 1073.
The abbey marked a central point on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route, connecting the castle of Ulignano to Castelfiorentino for travelers heading to Jerusalem.
The structure now functions partially as private residences and storage facilities, with a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria remaining accessible.
A prominent square tower survives from the original medieval structure, standing as evidence of the abbey's architectural evolution through centuries.
