Boccaccio's House

Boccaccio's House is a three-story stone building in Certaldo containing exhibitions across multiple floors about the famous poet's life and literary works. The rooms display manuscripts, everyday objects, and artworks that document the medieval period and the writer's significant place in European literature.

The building dates to the early 13th century and reflects medieval Tuscan architecture. A devastating 1944 airstrike caused severe damage, but the house was fully reconstructed, making it a testament to both medieval craftsmanship and modern restoration.

The house preserves handwritten books and period furniture that show how people lived during Boccaccio's time. In the poet's own room hangs a portrait by Benvenuti, giving visitors a personal connection to the literary figure who shaped European storytelling.

The house is easily reached on foot through Certaldo's medieval streets and has steep stairs between its floors. Wear comfortable shoes since the narrow passages and flights of stairs can be tiring during your visit.

The collection includes women's shoes from the 14th and 15th centuries that reveal what fashion looked like in that era. These objects offer a rare glimpse into how ordinary people dressed during the time when the poet lived and wrote.
