Abbey of San Magno, Fondi

The Abbey of San Magno is a medieval Benedictine monastery located at Monte Arcano outside Fondi, distinguished by its Latin cross layout. The structure includes a Romanesque crypt beneath the main church and walls decorated with 12th-century frescoes in the apse and transept areas.

The monastery was founded in 522 by Abbot Saint Honoratus of Fondi during the early expansion of monastic communities in southern Italy. A major reconstruction took place in the 15th century under the direction of Prospero Colonna, updating much of the original medieval structure.

Archaeological excavations have revealed a mill, guest quarters, and oil processing tanks buried beneath and around the site, revealing how the monastery operated as a working community.
