Santa Maria in Piazza, Romanesque church in Fondi, Italy

Santa Maria in Piazza is a church in Fondi with architectural elements spanning from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. The interior divides into three naves separated by pointed arches that rise toward a coffered ceiling, creating a sense of vertical space and light.

Construction of this church began in the late 1400s and was completed within a few years, showing a focused building effort. The formal consecration took place several years after completion, establishing it as an active religious center for the community.

The church stands on a raised churchyard reached by nine basalt steps, about two metres above the street. The main portal is on the facade, with two side portals matching the inner naves; the bell tower with its pyramidal cusp rises to the left of the facade.

The architrave of the main marble portal, attributed to Tommaso Malvito, carries a relief of five winged cherubs, and the jambs bear the coats of arms of the Caetani d'Aragona. Above it, a lunette holds the Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Count Onorato II kneeling in prayer.
