Church of the Cross

The Church of the Cross is a Renaissance building in Senigallia featuring four exterior pilasters topped with Corinthian capitals and a tympanum decorated with geometric Istrian stone patterns. Inside, the barrel-vaulted ceiling is fitted with coffered sections adorned with arabesque ornaments that create a layered visual effect.

A confraternity dedicated to the Sacrament and the Cross commissioned architect Muzio Oddi to design this building, which was constructed between 1605 and 1608. This construction period marks the transition into the early modern era when such religious organizations were rebuilding their meeting places with contemporary architectural styles.

The ceiling displays square coffers with arabesque patterns that feature Eucharist symbols, showing what the confraternity valued spiritually. Walking inside, you notice how the decoration reveals the religious beliefs of those who commissioned this place.

A Venetian pipe organ crafted in 1775 by master builder Gaetano Callido sits above the entrance on the elevated platform. This instrument remains a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of organ builders from that era.
