Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata, Parish church in Longarone, Italy.
Santa Maria Immacolata Church is a parish church in Longarone with a spiral structure made of white-pink reinforced concrete in an elliptical shape. Its interior includes a main worship space and an outdoor area facing the Vajont Dam.
This church was built between 1975 and 1982 and replaced the previous structure destroyed in the 1963 Vajont disaster. The reconstruction was a sign of the community's determination to rebuild what was lost.
The church displays terracotta Stations of the Cross along its internal walkway and houses a wooden Madonna statue recovered after the disaster. These artworks reflect the community's experience of loss and recovery.
The indoor worship space features seating for services, while the outdoor area is shaped like an amphitheater and welcomes visitors. Both sections are connected by a system of paths that are easy to walk.
Architect Giovanni Michelucci designed a network of paths connecting different levels and guiding visitors through light and space. The building frames its surroundings and offers walkers a fresh perspective on the landscape.
