San Martino, Baroque church in historic center, Asti, Italy.
San Martino is a baroque church in the historic center of Asti with a central nave that features barrel vaults opening into a Greek cross shape. Side chapels line the space, and an octagonal lantern dome sits above the intersection.
The origins date to the Middle Ages, but the building was completely rebuilt in 1707 with its baroque design. It ranked as the third most important religious building in the city after the Cathedral and San Secundus.
The walls inside feature frescoes by Giancarlo Aliberti and oil paintings by Michelangelo Pittatore showing different saints. These artworks make the space a place where visitors naturally stop to look and think.
The church sits at Piazza San Martino 11 in the San Martino - San Rocco district and is easily reached on foot from the city center. Entrance is free, though regular services take place, so check opening hours before visiting.
The original bell tower from the 14th century still stands, marking centuries of continuity on this site. The entrance portal features a dedicated niche with a statue of Saint Martin, the church's patron.
