Applied Arts Collection of Milan, Art museum in Sforza Castle, Milan, Italy
The Applied Arts Museum in Sforza Castle displays ceramics, glass objects, textiles, and decorative pieces spanning multiple historical periods. The collection is distributed across several galleries within the castle complex, offering a broad view of European decorative arts.
The collection was founded in 1900 after wealthy Milanese families began donating their private art collections starting in 1878. These donations of family treasures became the foundation for one of Italy's most important collections of decorative arts.
The collection displays the Gonzaga Cup, a glass vessel adorned with gold details that showcases exceptional craftsmanship. You can also see the Trivulzio Tapestries, which depict the twelve months and were designed by Bramantino for the local nobility.
Entry is through the main castle gate at Piazza Castello, and the galleries are well-marked to help you navigate the collection. Wear comfortable shoes as you explore, since the museum spaces spread across different levels of the castle complex.
The ceramic section features medieval and Renaissance pottery from workshops in Lodi and Milan, showing how regional artisans developed their techniques over time. This focus on local craftsmanship reveals a lesser-known side of the region's artistic heritage beyond famous masterpieces.
