Santa Maria al Giglio, Roman Catholic church in Montevarchi, Italy.
Santa Maria al Giglio is a parish church in Montevarchi featuring a single nave that extends roughly 23 meters in length and 8 meters in width. The interior is defined by a wooden truss ceiling and the floor is laid with terracotta tiles.
The church grew out of devotion to a miraculous fresco displayed in a tabernacle at this location. Construction following this discovery was completed in 1613.
The name derives from a miraculous image of the Madonna that drew local devotion to this spot. Visitors can still see the artistic marks left by local painter Luberto da Montevarchi in the frescoes that define the interior.
The church is easy to reach on foot and sits along a street in central Montevarchi. Visitors will get the best view of the interior decoration when arriving during daylight hours when natural light streams through the windows.
The bell tower features an unusual sail design that visually resembles a raised cloth and differs from square or round towers. It originally held three bells that conveyed messages to the community on different occasions.
