Santa Maria della Neve Church, Roman Catholic church in Pisogne, Italy.
Santa Maria della Neve is a church in Pisogne, on the eastern shore of Lake Iseo in Lombardy, with a single nave divided by transverse arches. The walls, vaults, and ceiling are entirely covered with frescoes depicting biblical scenes in a continuous visual sequence.
The church was built at the end of the 15th century as part of the local building tradition along the lakeshore. In the early 17th century, two entrance porticos were added to receive a growing number of pilgrims visiting the site.
The frescoes by Girolamo Romanino cover nearly every surface inside, from walls to ceiling, and show scenes from the life of Christ in bold colors. Walking through the space feels like being surrounded by images that speak to each other across the room.
The church sits just outside the center of Pisogne and can be reached on foot without difficulty. Opening hours are limited on certain days of the week, so it is worth checking current times before visiting.
Some of the frescoes that once decorated the outer facade were later moved inside the building, where they can still be seen today. This means the exterior and interior together hold paintings from different periods, placed side by side.
