Large Square Form with Cut is a marble sculpture on Piazza San Marco measuring approximately 5.4 meters tall. The work features clean geometric shapes and polished surfaces carved from white marble.
The work was created in 1974 using marble blocks from Monte Altissimo quarries. It was installed at the site of the former Porta Fiorentina gate and introduced contemporary art into the city's public spaces.
The sculpture represents the first major contemporary art installation in Prato, marking a shift toward modern public art in the city landscape.
The sculpture stands on Piazza San Marco and can be viewed from multiple angles. Different times of day offer changing light and shadow effects that reveal different aspects of the carved forms.
The interior of the sculpture was deliberately cut through, allowing light to pass through precisely angled openings. These hollowed spaces create a complex interaction between solid form and empty space.
